| Spalted” maple is not a type of tree but actually a term for the process of the natural decomposition of wood. It occurs in sapwood, but produces dramatic “zone” line patterns only in light colored wood. Spalting is much like Bleu cheese--If you catch it in time you have perfection, if you delay, it’s soft, punky and useless. |
