Wood has always fascinated me. The fact that this material was once alive to sustain our lives, is an awesome concept. The many different shades of earth tones found in a given piece of wood is like an artist’s palette of umbers, siennas, and ochres.

My instinctive love of nature brought me from New York City to Pennsylvania. I hike through forests in awe of their spectacular beauty where I find myself “one” with nature. It is with nature that I continue to evolve my art from pencil and paintbrush to gouge and chisel.

I do not create beauty. I do not enhance beauty. God has already done that! I discover the intrinsic beauty that already exists within each piece. Each piece is unique as each tree is unique. I am continually challenged by the endless design possibilities of the human form combined with the unpredictability of a medium that was once truly alive. I find my forms inter-relate to the human figure more everyday. This has not been a conscious effort. Figure drawing has been such an important part of my artistic life that the sensuous subtle human contours I have studied for years now unconsciously appear in my work at the lathe. And to that end, I strive to maintain a balance of design and incorporate simplicity of contour.

Most of my pieces are turned from hardwood, primarily maple, cherry, black walnut and red cedar. Many are accented with exotic woods from around the world. Some, I inlay with various metals to complement their beauty and, or accentuate the natural voids and bark inclusions. My sources of wood are from trees that are no longer wanted and are either destined for the fireplace or landfill. I feel that I am giving a little back to the tree just as its life has given so much to sustain mine.

Born and educated in New York, Ted graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan with a BFA in Illustration. He practiced illustration for 16 years while actively woodworking as a hobby. He has studied the human figure extensively through drawing and appreciates the subtle nuances of contour found in all of nature. He now applies those subtle forms within the medium of wood with respect to woodturning.

American Association of Woodturners,
The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, The Lehigh Valley Woodturners,
